That is an indication of a weak, worn, dribbling injector between firing. In that sense, the injector might well bleed down when shut off.putting diesel fuel into the top of the rings.and compromising the cylinder wall lube on re-firing of the engine. Yes, these older 1.6's did tend to consume oil more than the newer ALH engines do.
2011 Golf 6 tdi 1.6. 86k km on it. had the cam belt changed about 5k km back with full service. The problem that I have is I get a lot of white smoke and rough idle on start-up,but only if the car stands for a while eg overnight when the car gets temperature there is nothing wrong with it,no smoke and no rough idle????
The base engine was initially the 1.3 option as used in the first generation Golf, accompanied by 1.6- and 1.8-litre petrol fours and 1.6-litre naturally aspirated or turbocharged diesel engines. In January 1984 a new base engine was introduced, a 1.05 litre inline-four mainly available in Italy and Greece. [5]
The Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI's engine is a turbocharged diesel, 1.6 litre, double overhead camshaft 4 cylinder with 4 valves per cylinder. This powerplant produces 103.5 bhp (105 PS/77 kW) of power at 4400 rpm, and maximum torque of 250 N·m (184 lb·ft/25.5 kgm) at 1500-2500 rpm. This power is transferred to the wheels via a 5 speed manual gearbox.
Golf mk2 1.6td turbo upgrade question. « Reply #2 on: January 07, 2009, 10:30:04 am ». A bigger turbo is meant to generate higher boost pressures which will in turn increase power. Getting a bigger turbo serves no purpose if you are going to stay boosting at 10 psi. If anything, a bigger turbo boosting at the same pressure would give you more
Bentley says my standard IP timing should be "checking .83 - .93mm; adjusting .86 +- .02mm. For improved performance, checking .93 - 1.03mm; adjusting .98 +- .02mm." When I adjusted my IP, I set it at .86mm. Car is running nicely, although I think it vibrates a bit too much at idle. The idle RPM seems kinda low.

The VW 1.5, 1.6, and early (1993-1996 and some thereafter) 1.9 are IDI or Indirect Injection engines. The newer 1.9 (1996 Passats, 1997 and on Jettas, and 1998 and on Golfs) and later "Clean Diesels" are TDI or Direct Injection engines. Now just because there is a Turbo on an IDI engine does not make it a TDI. It makes it a Turbo Diesel IDI.

Re: 1.6 D Build (or 1.6 TD conversion) « Reply #3 on: April 05, 2013, 05:22:11 pm ». The only difference internally of the 1.6 and 1.9 pumps is the cam disk. It has a steeper higher lift ramp on each lobe. It can inject more fuel quicker and sooner.. and at a higher break pressure if so desired. Logged.
